I'm so excited to have found you all!

Is anyone else aware of the fact that most public schools, all the ones I know of at least, have a silent-but-deadly no touching at all policy? no high fives, no HUGS, nada? I initially created a petition (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/help-revoke-the-quotno-touchingquot-policy-at-kilmer-middle-school-in-vienna-va) in response to a news article I read about it, but have found that it may not be the best route (a good place to at least find contacts interested in my topic, though!) and am looking for people with ideas or the motivation to work with me on combating this silly rule. There's more information on this in the petition letter, otherwise you can email me - I'm really, though, like I said looking for with-the-system ways to go about changing this. Currently I'm planning to just draw up letters to put in newspapers and publications to get the word out.

A SNUGGLE; WHAT'S THAT???
The Nurturing SNUGGLE... For those of us who don't get enough cuddling in our life, this is an opportunity to bask in warm, nurturing physical affection and playfulness. This is a non-sexual (i.e. NO SEX) gathering focused on lounging in a comfortable environment where we can open our hearts and exchange hugs, kisses, caresses, massages and more without the presence of pressure. In our gatherings, we recognizing all acts of love and affection as gifts, and we honor each other as sacred beings united at a spiritual level. We come together with a shared intention to create a safe space to share warmth, affection and light sensual playfulness. So come, relax, and be smothered in genuine affection.

WHY A SNUGGLE...
Because we need human contact! It is easy to feel alienated from physical contact in our culture. Often, any affection beyond friendly hugs seems to threaten us with questions about the nature and direction of the relationship with the person with whom we are sharing affection. We rarely sit around simply holding our friends, gently caressing each other that does not have stronger sexual contact as its goal. Many of us can benefit from cuddling without any other goal but nurturing human contact. And so we are creating a space where that is the stated intention up front.

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO...
While every Snuggle will be slightly different, here are some things that are planned: we will start the evening with a snackluck (like a potluck but with finger food), spending time getting to know each other as we share food, followed by a short ritual or other introductory ceremony where we will lay down snuggle guidelines for communicating and respecting personal boundaries. We will do some exercises or games where we practice communicating and listening to boundaries. During most of the evening, there will be opportunities to engage in massage circles, playful games or "puppy piles". Asking and gaining consent will be an important part of all our interactions. Feel free to initiate activities, participate in what feels comfortable, or just see how others engage in play.

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING...
Wear loose, comfortable clothing (such as pajamas or sweats) and bring any items that seem appropriate (for instance, if you enjoy having your hair brushed, be sure to bring a brush). Please keep both a top and bottom on during the entire Snuggle. Bring a donation. Please bring finger food to share for the snackluck. Leave the grit and stress from daily life behind; perhaps take a relaxing bath beforehand and DO NOT WEAR perfumes, scented aftershave, deodorants or hair products, etc. (Some people are allergic to perfumes and scented products). Come prepared to be present and bring a positive attitude about bodies and touch. We respect and welcome heartfelt expressions of emotion and try to offer a safe atmosphere to express such feelings. Remember, when you attend a Snuggle, you are leaving the dominant culture behind and entering a magical space where it is okay to touch our friends and people we have just met with affection and warmth.

WHAT IF I AM UNCOMFORTABLE...
Snuggles are meant to be a safe space for anyone who wants to enjoy being in an affectionate atmosphere. You should never feel pressured at any time to join any activity or interact with any person(s) you do not want to. We all share responsibility for communicating and honoring boundaries. As with all our activities, please do not feel like you should do anything outside your comfort zone. If you ever feel pressured or that your boundaries are being violated after you have communicated them clearly, you should bring it to the attention of a Snuggle facilitator.

THIS IS A GENDER AND AGE BALANCED EVENT...
We want everybody to feel comfortable, so we balance the guest list to ensure a diversity in age and an equality in gender. If we have more men RSVP than women, they will be placed on a wait list until we have enough females. If you are a women and want to bring a man, he will be admitted. If you are a man and want to bring a woman, you will be both admitted.

Dying

For the last 17 years I have has the privilege of watching over my mother and her health. She has had three different types of cancers over the last 17 years. My mother survived breast cancer, two malignant tumors in her brain, and a cancerous lymphoid in her neck. She is a survivor and has always done it with a smile on her face. This time though it’s different.

Last Monday my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and this time I know in my heart that she is not going to make it. I try to stay strong for my children, my siblings, my mother and everyone who know me. But its taking a toll on me...I never thought of my life without my mother.

Everything I am and who I believe I am is a result of her strength, love and presence in my life. She has been more of a friend than a mother since I was 17. It hurts for me to see her weak and beaten. When I think of her, I recount our lives together. I remember the good times, the bad times; I also have come to acknowledge the pain of knowing I cannot do anything to prevent her from dying.

I always thought there would be more time, more hugs and a lot more good times ahead for us. Instead I cry when I am alone, smile in the presence of people and am that rock in which my family has expected me to be.

Since her diagnosis I find myself feeling selfish for asking for help from my siblings and leaning on my boyfriend for support. These feelings will pass as time goes on but I still need to acknowledge that they are there. During these times I just want to curl up in the bed and be hugged.

Morgan Stanley!!!

I just got offered a part time job cataloging 200 paintings for Morgan Stanley. All because I missed a bus and was wearing poka-dot.

So I missed my connecting bus. There was a group of women talking about how they get judged when they shop because they are overweight. One made a comment on how she likes my poka-dot skirt. I thanked her and jumped into the conversation saying how I get judged at stores as well cause I'm young. 4 of the women get off the bus.

she comes over and sits next to me and we talk a little bit. She asks me what I do and I told her I'm studying to be an art teacher. She was happy and said that her company is looking for an art student to cataloge 200 paintings for them part time.

she asked if I wanted the job and I said yes. She gave me her buisness card and told me to call her tomorrow.

I pocketed the card without even looking at it. Got to the coffee shop, and told my friend. He asked what company, I pulled out the card and it is Morgan Stanley. OMG!! If I do good they'll call me back to do more work for them!

(sorry for the long ramble I'm just so excited!!!)

Death

My grandmother died at age 70 today of lung cancer and pneumonia a few
minutes after 4pm.

I can't go to the funeral. Grandmother asked my mom to make sure my
sister and I do not miss any school. My mother won't let my sister or
me go because she promised.

Its hard. I skipped school today because my mother told me the doctors
said Grandma had 24 hours to live. I got to my mom's house at 3, and
we got the call at 4. So much for 24 hours.

My mother had a flight booked for 8am tomorrow morning. She will never
see her mother alive again. She thought she had time. Even if she had
caught the next flight (after the 1st phone call) at 2, she still
would not have been there in time to see her mom one last time. There
was nothing she could do. Its painful.

I hate seeing my mother so sad, she in an anchor in my life. Losing
Grandmother is painful enough, but seeing my mother weakened and
crying is unbearable. All I can do is think "what if it was my mother
that died? could i be as strong as i would need to be? would i make
it?"

The one "positive" thing out of all of this: This morning Grandmother
wasn't feeling any pain at all, she was near the end and accepting her
death. Grandmother went in her sleep. Her breathing slowed down until
she wasn't breathing anymore. There was no struggle, her eyes were
closed and when she took her last breath her face was completely
relaxed: she had let go of this world and moved on into the next.

I guess all i need is someone to talk to, or in this case rant at.

Thanks for letting me get it off my shoulders, i feel a lot better now.

They are mainly a preventative charity which in terms of being a street child can mean the difference between a world of pain and heartache and a life worth living. Railway children endeavour to meet runaway children before pimps, pushers or abusers do. They are even getting to help the kids in Siberia who are living in the sewers.

80% of their money goes straight to the projects, 17% fundraising, 3% admin etc, so they are a 'fair-enough-trade' charity.

10p a search is phenomenal and it means that the average amount spent per child -£44- will take 440 searches...its fairly usual for me to search 20 items per evening, so that means in 22 evenings that ground level support for a child is reached. www.railwaychildren-friends.com/email.asp

There is a snag with the search page which is that on entering a search it automatically redirects to a normal search page for the results. So inorder that you keep raising money for the charity you have to go back to the root page with the picture of the child and the green bits for each new search subject to raise another all important 10p.

that when You give or get a hug, it makes You feel sooo much more Alive?!
And time seems longer during the hug too??
I have noticed that a hug often feels longer than the actual
time it took. Is it perception or Perhaps that is part of the magic of hugs?
And what about Naked hugs? At a pool party I went to where clothing was optional,
I was able to give and get Naked hugs(plutonic) and that was the coolest experience.

That's right folks. You're hereby invited to visit me while I work this summer at Mount Bonaparte fire lookout.

It would be super awesome to be able to share my hospitality in this cabin on a tower, and be relieved of my excessive solitude. And I am a very huggable person.

Here's how you'd find me at the lookout: It's near Tonasket, Washington, which is about 7 hours from Portland, Oregon if you go east on Hwy. 84 and then north on Hwy 97. From Seattle take Hwy 20 east.

From Tonasket, take a right on the road to Havillah (about 17 miles), then turn right on W. Lost Lake Rd. Go about 0.75 miles and turn right on Road 300. Go to the end of that road (about 4 miles) and you'll find the trail to Mount Bonaparte. It says trail number 306.

I could use a hug

I'm feeling pretty alone lately and I could use some hugs. I am not talking to someone that I deeply love because every time I do things get out of hand from one side or the other. What little relationship there was is totally inappropriate for reasons I will not go into here, and has been stopped. The problem is she holds a real special place in my heart and I miss her voice terribly. We travel in the same circles so we will be seeing each other everywhere. I wish with all my heart that we could stay friends and be able to talk to each other.

Many years ago I was having rough times and a homeless man who was rather dirty and unkempt walked up to me and gave me a sincere hug. It was so very moving I even broke out intears. It was quite possibly the greates hug I ever had...just a stranger down on his luck as I was washed away all of my pain in a moment.

My Free Hug Experience

Hi all, first of all thank you to Clay for creating this tribe. I would love to see the Hug become the new handshake...thanks for supporting my vision everyone.

Okay, so here's what I want to talk about. I recently saw the utube free Hugs video on utube and thought what a cool and loving idea. I wanted to duplicate it! If only in my own small way.

Several days later I attended an free seminar on internet marketing and it took no little courage to actually stand in the hotel lobby with my FREE HUGS sign...and ask people if they wanted a hug. I did my best to focus on cheerfulness, love, openness...whatever I felt would allow people to consider choosing step into that.

Also keeping in mind that it was an invitation, not a command and there would be no judgement from me if they chose not to accept my offer. However, there was still that part of me that felt pain when my offer was rejected..and to the extent...that the rejector rejected...if you get my meaning.

"I'm already married"
"I had mine this morning"
"Are you a nut?"

Many just laughed and said nothing, many laughed and said no thanks. Some just went to the furthest part of the room and kept a wary eye on me.

The group was comprised of husband and wife couples and pairs of men or women.

While I truly didnt want to, I couldnt help it that part of my feelings of rejection came through in my energy although despite this the last 2 people who did accept/give hugs were a lovely husband wife couple and great huggers.

so 4 out of approximately 50 people actually took me up on the offer. I am grateful for having done it and I felt that I added something good to what I am and to the other people there.

I sat through the "seminar" which turned out to be a marketing pitch to get people to spend $2700 on a web site and hosting. The energy coming from the presenters was somehow heavy and guarded and the energy from the rest of the group mirrored that. Although people were very nice to me--even though they hadnt accepted my offer.

So now it's been over for several weeks and although I dont regret doing it, I also feel that I somehow..could have done better, given that the energy and events after my free hugging adventure were less than I would have wished to create.

I review the Free Hugs video and I salute that gentleman for his courage and love.

Any thoughts?

Hug to the right and touch hearts.

It was pointed out to me that if 2 people hug to the right, i.e. if when I hug someone, I go to my right and the other person goes to his/her right, our hearts touch each other.

This makes the hug a much deeper connection.

For some reason, most people habitually hug to the left.

I invite everyone to try hugging to the right. The effect is profoundly wonderful.

Hugging and one-sided sexual stirrings

Hi Huggers.

New here and new to a group of flesh & blood people in Victoria, BC who hug all the time and I am loving it!

But... (I looked for this topic on earlier postings here and couldn't find one like it) I wonder if anyone here wants to discuss the implications / complexities of hugs (particularly long lingering hugs) that unintentionally stirs up sexual desire in one, but not both people? (No problem if it is both people!)

It has happened to me both ways - someone else feels the hug energy sexually when I don't, or I feel sparks and waves of desire when they don't. I am comfortable having a quick conversation to sort out the misunderstanding, but not everyone is, and then it can get a bit sticky / heavy.

My fear is that after the misunderstanding, "A-frame" hugs will replace what are really the best full frontal bear hugs or that people would be judged as being creepy and maybe not get hugs in the future.

The whole boundary communication issue is rich here...

Anyone else have something to share around this?

I'd prefer to go to a female MD or ND, I was going to go to Balance Health Professionals at Broadway and Commercial...anyone been there?
As for the MD, I'm looking for someone who's down to earth and will understand that I'm into alternative medecine.

Andrew was a son of the rural land coop that we live in, the daddy of an amazing daughter, a jack leg mechanic and had the most finely honed sense of justice that I have ever encountered. He was 25. I think I need to vent

I think I just need to vent and everyone I know is sleeping.

I am a full time nursing student and a pretty "green" one at that. But right now I feeling some feelings I cant describe and dont know what to do with.

This summer, the class is doing clincials in Chico at Enloe Medical Center. This is the end of the 2nd semester and a year to go to graduation. This week was our first week in Chico.

On our way back home through the canyon-70 miles long and narly-a van flashing his lights stopped us, into the first few tight curves headed down hill. He said there was an accident ahead, cells dont work and hes going for help, a woman is badly injured. The driver of our vehicle is an EMT, so we headed down, jumped out to find a car crushed and a woman trapped inside, bleeding profusely. We grabbed clothes from a bag to wrap a severe wound on her left upper arm and put pressure on it. I ran around to the passenger window that wasnt crushed, to find her with her head in the passenger seat. She had glass in her eyes, lacerations on her face and the engine pushed onto her left leg. The driver door and window were crushed in on her body. Another classmate got a blood pressure cuff, I got her vital signs and asked her to stay with me until we could get her out. I found out who she was and where she was coming from. She was getting shocky and there wasnt anything we could do to really help her for the moment except be there and keep her listening and concentrating on us. The paramedics arrived 20 minutes later and began cutting her out of the car. I made her listen to my voice because I was so afraid she would die and she was freaking out because of the pain in her left leg. She didnt know how she got there or what happened. But she would squeeze my hand when I asked her to so I knew she was still with me. She looked at me several times right in the eyes. The guys cut the top off the car and pulled the engine off her leg. The strange thing that happened before I got to her is: a woman showed up with gloves for us. I am allergic to latex. She told me shes been a nurse for years, these are for you and helped open vinyl gloves for me put my hands into so I could go around to the other side of the car and not get blood on me. I turned around, and she was gone. None of us saw her again. The paramedics got her out after and hour and a half, got her into the helicopter that landed on the road in the canyon below us, to take her to the hospital we had just left earlier. This is my first trauma. I am feeling so many feelings I am not sure what to do with. I am so amped from the adrenaline and yet on the edge of tears. But I cant cry. Right now I dont know what to do with all this. If we had been any further ahead on the road, that vehicle would have been us. The logging truck was going too fast, the logs came off the trailer and rolled onto her car. The truck was on its side on the edge of the road, which had a pretty severe drop off. Holy smokes, what do I do with all these feelings? I have said prayers for the woman who was injured and taken to Enloe, but dont know any more about her at this point. Next week when I go back to Enloe, I will probably see her, assuming shes still alive. Traffic looked like it was backed up in the canyon for miles. The CHP let us go through to get home knowing we had had a long couple of days in Chico. Now that I am here, I am so wake and thinking. I would so love a hug from anyone right now. We jumped out and did what we knew we should do. But the time afterward is tough now. Why is that? I am just glad we were there at that moment. But it feels so bad somehow.

Hugfest grows to memorable proportions

As a repressed hug slut....recently out of the closet...I happily reminisce about this tale of the warm embrace on one altered night this year on the playa.

It was Tuesday? night and we set out for what was to be the highlight of my week. As a typically overly reserved individual I had been having wonderful insight into the possibilities that exist for myself by experimentation with certain externally encouraged uninhibited, energetic, and loving states. After quite a time of exploring this lack of inhibition on the never before enjoyed dance floor, my girlfriend and I floated next door to the Flight to Mars. In one of the rooms we happened upon a wonderfully furry full length coat that spoke to me in a gentle but insistent tone asking for a bear hug. Not knowing if the coat’s wearer was feeling the same as his attire, I checked in and received a more than willing approval. The temporarily inexhaustible energy source pouring from my chest like a fire hose surged through this coat and its bearer bringing them closer to my state if they weren’t in fact already there themselves. My girlfriend enjoyed a similar embrace and the next people that walked into the room could not resist asking for a similar embrace. Each successive individual that walked into the room would either join in on what was already going on or we would invite them to join, fully respecting whatever boundaries were in place for that individual at the moment.

The hug-ees ebbed and flowed and after about 10 minutes into the ordeal we found that one couple had permanently joined us as part of the official hug welcoming committee for this room….15 hug filled minutes later and we had a 5th official hugger with us! We sprawled on each others laps and continued to invite people new to the room to enjoy one of the growing menu of hugs that we were serving up. Standing hugs, sitting hugs, one armed hugs, hugs with supplemental kisses on the cheek, bear hugs ….but most of important of all….my personal favorite…..the 6 person, sprawled across the floor, head to toe, Flight to Mars, full body hug!

At quite a few times throughout the evening there must have been 4-5 huggees combined with the 5 official huggers in this tiny, less than standing height room for the 10 person decathahug.

I was particularly touched by projecting my normally inhibited self onto the 5th official hugger. He appeared to me to be tall, quiet, awkward and shy much like the way I feel on a normal day, but fully loving every moment of physical closeness we were all sharing. He (I) would have never initiated this on his own but was so fulfilled to happen across this warm, caring, non sexual but intimate exchange. I felt so good to have started this event and that I could share it with him….but really was just touched and fulfilled to be there myself.

A close second to the enjoyment of the hugs themselves were people’s responses to our hug invitation. Some people’s eyes would light up and they would jump into our arms….others would approach with hesitation and the feeling of them letting go of their reservation and giving themselves up to the hug was as satisfying as the hug itself. But my favorite response, usually from men, was of contemplation…”do I really want a hug…especially from another man” they would think to themselves as though they were reviewing their macho-ness and sexuality at the same time…..this invariably gave way to an energetically enthusiastic but still macho “Hell yeah! I want a hug” which was always proceeded by a rewarding full strength bear hug.

We must have hugged over 200 people in the hour or two that we were there. With 5 of us hugging, that makes over 1000 hugs! Of everyone that came through, only 2 or 3 people declined our offer, again a pretty good record.

As my girlfriend and I rolled into our camp after dancing till 10AM, I lay in bed and could not figure out why my arms were so sore. Then it came to me….it was from all the hugging! With that realization we laughed and then fell asleep with sleepy satisfied nostalgic smiles on our faces.

Women and Hugs...

Hi all,
I've been coordinating and facilitating cuddle parties in the bay area now for the past few months (if you don't know about these - check out www.cuddleparty.com) - and am noticing that many more men reply with interest than women. Since we gender-balance most of the parties (except the "especially queer friendly" ones - which have been incredibly inspiring - but that's another post!) - I'm curious - what's keeping women from coming forward with wanting to cuddle too??
